THINGS TO KNOW: THE GENETICS OF TARA Retrievers, dysplasia. . MY FIRST EXPERIENCE ON dysplasia, I have known and met it too soon, and I would give this witness who can serve as a warning to those who are preparing to buy a golden retriever.
It happened also to me to make mistakes when in 1998 I decided to buy my first Golden, Ginevra. For once, I chose to give me the dog i thought “suits me”. I bought some good texts on Golden and, having to choose how to take, I addressed myself to a letter of privates equipped with pedigree. Parents were two beautiful healthy Goldens and I believed that puppies born in the family, just cuddled and cherished, would be more balanced and calm. I also assumed that it would be certainly healthy but I was wrong (Later on, I discovered that many amateur breeders of Golden prefer that the litter is born at home but then I didn’t know the existence of amateur breedings and retriever club). In fact, Ginevra, when it was six months old, already had two major dysplasias to both her hips ; one sister of the same bitter was already virtually blocked. The owners of puppies, being inexperienced breeders, had trusted the insurances of veterinarians, who stated that the dogs were free of dysplasias (Later on, I discovered that they hadn’t made the officials reading of hips and elbows but they had only the reading of the veterinarian. The result has been that, for that bitter, five Goldens of nine, resulted sick of dysplasia. Ginevra and other three puppies had to undergo two surgical operations, expensive and painful, called “triple” to both her hips with subsequent long period of rehabilitation. After one year, it has been necessary to sterilize Ginevra: because of her good smell, males were very intrusive toward her and this fact caused her severe pain because it has into her hips six metal plates.
This unfortunate and painful experience has induced me to know and keep me informed about everything concerning the dysplasia and how to try to prevent it. Besides, what happened, has motivated me to know as much as possibile about this wonderful breed so that my passion for Goldens has increased. Those who wish to address to a good breeding of Goldens, must know that commercial breedings, whose advertisements can be found on Internet and in newspapers, don’t always guarantee the necessary professionalism, given that each litter must be followed with particolar care and attention and often a commercial structure don’t allow that; the breeder responsible should even bother to follow the puppy in his new family to promote the inclusion and appropriate care with advice and suggestions. Other data that must not be neglected is the importance of the official certiication about “the lack of dysplasia of hips and elbows”. To obtain a serious certification the breeder must have addressed to official bodies authorized and read the plates made to parents of the puppy to be purchased. So, when you buy a Golden, don’t be fooled by a low purchase price, because it usually hides serious problems.
Throughout the world there are Retrievers Clubs governing the races of 5 Retrievers and they list accredited breeders. in Italy there are retrievers clubs - www.retrieversclub.it/cuccreq.htm e www.retrieversitalia.it/allevatori.htm -, imposing the associated rules, ordered by a statutory regulation that calls breeders to a very strict ethics.
Even buying a puppy from a litter of individuals sometimes presents many unknowns, even if breeders are in good faith, usually they are not sufficiently prepared to assess aspects described above. Lots of information are collected to specific links that can return profitable when the master buys a golden. In section information on the site of Mariepierre Bodson www.mapigolden.com/informazioni.htm, that you can read and memorize
